Robinson Family

ROBINSON Family of Warmington

The ROBINSON family were tenant farmers of the Earl of Jersey for some fifty years until 1846. They farmed Manor Farm and lived in the Manor House overlooking the village green in Warmington. After they lost the tenancy, the family continued to live in various cottages in the village, working mainly as farm labourers.
Thomas ROBINSON,

farmer and churchwarden, was born about 1751, not in Warmington, but was buried here in 1816 with his first wife (M.I.). He married Rose WRIGHTON (c1750 – 1792) in 1772. He married his second wife, Ann NORTON in 1796. She outlived him, dying in 1847, aged 78.
Thomas and Rose had eight children:
1. Elizabeth, baptised 1774, married Thomas NORTON in 1795.
2. Sarah, baptised 1776
3. John, 1777 – 1855, married Frances, (c.1779 – 1852) at Shotteswell in 1800.. He lost the tenancy of Manor Farm in 1846 and was described as “pauper ” in the 1851 census. John and Frances had seven children:
a). William born in Shotteswell, died a bachelor in Warmington 1880.
b). Ann, 1803 – 88, married 1833, George MITCHELL, c1805 – 1887.
c). Sarah, 1806 – 30 (M.I.) married 1827 George TURVEY, sawyer & had two children, Charlotte, 1828 – . & John TURVEY, 1829 – .
d). Joseph, 1809 – 72, labourer, married 1833 Anne GARDNER, c.1818 – 55, of Ratley. Joseph & Anne had 6 children-
(1) Thomas, 1835 – 87, married 1867 Harriet GARDNER. No known issue.
(2) Henry, 1837 – 1854
(3) William baptised 1838. Probably died in infancy.
(4) Joseph baptised 1841. Brickmaker’s assistant in Arlescote in 1861
(5) Fanny baptised 1844. She had a daughter Sarah, born about 1870, who was in domestic service in 1891
(6) Elizabeth 1846-47.
e). Thomas, the fifth child of John and Frances, was born in 1812, was an agricultural labourer and married in 1834 Elizabeth BEESLEY. The couple had eight children:
(1) Sarah, baptised 1834
(2) John baptised 1836, died soon after the 1851 census when he was living on an Arlescote farm, employed as a milk boy.
(3) Anne baptised 1838
(4) Fanny 1840 – 42
(5) Thomas baptised 1842, believed to have emigrated to Australia
(6) Fanny baptised 1844
(7) Elizabeth baptised 1847
(8) James baptised 1853, believed to have emigrated to Australia.
f) John, the sixth child of John & Frances, was baptised 1814, & had a wife Ann BULL who had been born in Hanwell. He ran the brickyard in Arlescote & farmed a few acres there. The couple had one child, William born 1841, and then seem to have left the parish.
g) Henry, 1818 – 88,  the last child of John & Frances, married Elizabeth JARVIS in 1846. The couple had six children-
(1) John, born 1847, an agricultural labourer
(2) James F, born at Fenny Compton, about 1850
(3) William H, born at Fenny Compton, about 1851
(4) George born 1856
(5) Thomas born 1860
(6) Sarah Elizabeth, born 1865. A dairymaid in the 1891 census, she married soon after the census, John Edward BURNE, who was born in Lancashire around 1857, but who was working in Warmington as a gardener in 1891. The couple’s descendants live in the Manchester area.
4. Joseph, the fourth child of Thomas & Rose, was baptised in 1780
5. Anne, the fifth child, was baptised in 1782 & married Thomas WASHBROOK 1808.
6. Thomas, 1784 – 1845, an agricultural labourer, married twice. Firstly in 1810 Hannah MITCHELL, 1784 – 1814, and secondly in 1823 Elizabeth EDWARDS, c1782 – 1855.
Thomas & Hannah had three children:
a). William baptised 1810
b). Joseph 1812 – 15
c). Anne 1813 -13.
7. Richard, seventh child of Thomas & Rose, was born in 1786 & died in the workhouse in 1859.
8. William, born 1790.
Descendants of Thomas and Rose ROBINSON are believed to be still living in the local area, but no attempt has been made to trace the family after the nineteenth century.
